Learn the fundamentals of traditional silversmithing in this 15-hour course. Choose to learn during five evening classes or a 2-day weekend session.
Throughout this course, you will work on three projects:
  • A hand-forged sterling silver link bracelet
  • Pierced-design copper or brass earrings with silver earring wires
  • A mixed metal soldered pendant
Design ideas are provided, but you may bring your ideas too!

Through the completion of these projects, you will learn the following foundational techniques:
  • Using bench tools including hammers, pliers, jeweller's saw, files, and flex shaft
  • Sawing and piercing skills
  • Soldering techniques using an oxygen-propane Gentec little torch
  • Forming techniques using hammers, pliers, and dapping tools
  • Adding texture and dimension to your piece
  • Polishing and finishing metal
  • Creating findings (clasps, ear wires, jump rings)
This is the perfect course for the beginner silversmith who wants to understand the tools, steps, and techniques to create jewellery and develop the confidence to take on your own projects.

  • There will be a 30 minute lunch break each day. Please bring a lunch/snack or you can purchase something at the nearby Happy Goat Coffee on Laurel Street.
  • No stone setting is included in this course. Stone setting is covered in the bezel set pendant and bezel set ring workshops and in the "All Things Rings" 15-hour class (coming soon!!)
  • This course is a prerequisite for our intermediate and advanced courses.
  • Once you have completed this course, you are eligible to book metalwork bench time at the studio (link to bench rental purchase).

Materials are included in the course fee and are valued at $80.
